Marilyn Currill and family would like to thank you all for your kind thoughts and lovely memories of Colin. The tributes have all been printed off and are in a memory box that the family have made. It is wonderful to see so many happy memories recorded here and I hope the Red Leader ride was enjoyed by all - Colin would have loved it. It was nice to meet so many of you at the funeral. Carry on riding! Fantastic conditions for the outing. John was ready with his camera to capture the 14 of us that were able to make it. It was certainly good to see a few new faces. I include Mark Nixon (a long time member, whom has been disenchanted by drug taking in the club – brufen, cod liver oil, glucosamine, deep heat etc), & our old friends DM & DT. Our route would take us on a very flat outing toward Grendon Underwood where we then strayed onto new roads that I’ve never been on before. DM (who’d not seen his velo for 2 years) raced to the top of one or two minor inclines, but the effort was beginning to take its toll. We rotated work at the front, but clearly it was not a good idea for myself & Dave R to be doing the pulling, whilst idly chatting about the tour. The pace crept up & we lost DM. So the remainder of this gloriously sunny ride took place at a gentler pace. Having arrived at Winslow we stayed at the glorious Jenny Wren cafe. It was here that Pierre announced that the ride would be sponsored by Donn Welton. A very kind offer, & one gratefully received. This gave DM the opportunity to rehydrate with every known recovery linctus that he could find on the menu. After the photos had been taken, we wended our way to Steeple Claydon & in the general direction of Poundon. The route was mostly downhill, which kept us all as a group, although we did lose Martyn again at a busy road junction on the A41. So with spirits high, & with DM remembering that you need many more miles in the saddle to get your bum used to the discomfort, we ambled back to Islip. Pierre was the 1st to launch the final attack to the Islip sign, I followed, though we were a good half mile out. Pierre pulled to the left, so I was on my own with Dave R on my tail, & my chances fairly well spent. To my disgust, DT came streaming past, so I put what remained of my anaerobic effort down into the pedals, & managed to get on the back wheel. I like to think that we were sprinting for the traffic calming measure. If not, then I lost, & thus the whole sprint is formally noted to be neutralised. Pierre reported tyre failure as the reason for his non participation, & there was clear evidence that it was on the verge of failure. So, final distance was slightly over the pre outing reported figure, but all enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate the life of Colin, & to undertake his final new route. Ride details here. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/433799 Note that my heart rate & speed seems to have peaked toward the end. I cannot think why! |
Back
to Club Matters, club runs are continuing as normal and the best contact is
probably Ted, emailing ted@midoxon.com will
get to him. Sunday 20th July sees a forage to Cotswold Water park, billed as
flat, NOTE the Tea Stop is at Bibury, no Trout Tickling though.
Following week, 27th July is the Inaugural "Red Leader Ride" on a flat
route to Winslow, it seems apt that we name it such as this is the last route
that our late club secretary worked on. As many riders as possible in club
jerseys, or red or yellow. See you there.
8.30 Start at Carfax - for a very leisurely ride (for some)
| Colin Currill (1946-2008) It is with sadness, we report the death of our club secretary, Colin Currill. Colin battled with Cancer for many years, but never let it affect his happiness and enjoyment of every day life. He will be sorely missed. We have a small tribute page here www.midoxon.com/colin, please feel free to comment your memories of Colin if you feel it appropriate. Funeral at Oxford Crematorium, Friday 27th June 12.00. Family Flowers only, All donations to charity gratefully accepted. |
Colin sadly passed away on 18th June. He endured a long fight against cancer, & never let it overcome his desire to enjoy life. Colin, a very affable character with a streak of assertiveness within him, didn't let his 2002 diagnosis deter him from some of his cycling goals. In September 2004 he achieved the dual goal of the ascents of l'Alpe d'Huez & Le Mont Ventoux, & the opportunity to place his Peugeot cap on the Tom Simpson memorial. On local roads, Colin seemed to have a cartographers knowledge of Oxfordshire's highways/byways, & was always able to find us a quiet route, not recently traversed on a club run. He led us many times, & as the Mid Oxon general secretary also managed much of the daily club business . A staunch fanatic of the latest & greatest in Campagnolo equipment, Colin poured scorn on those of us that employed Japanese groupsets. This often involved the usual light hearted friendly banter….. up until our trip to Riccione in 2006 ended with Colin spending a week on a bike with Shimano equipment. This was not helped by the fact that the chain & sprockets were worn. It all resulted in a few pointed comments that are of course unrepeatable! More recently, Colin has been less able to join us on the club runs, but always remained involved. He recently set up the summer Sunday outings that a few of us like to enjoy for instance. Certainly a character whom will be missed by many, & doubtless by his many good friends in the cycling fraternity.
