World Trike Champs 2005

Steve Avery has competed in the World Trike Champs in France for the last 3 years, previously winning silver and bronze. Would he go one better this year...Read his account here. Would he have the rainbow bands on his Midoxon Jersey ?

Well we woke up the morning of the race in 30 degree heat at 7.00am, I had a very lazy morning drinking lots of water and chatting with friends. At 2pm a mate of mine put a thermometer in his awning and it was reading 43 degrees. At 3pm we all rode up from the campsite to the town for the parade of trikes 32 racing, 4 tandems and 7 disabled trikes.

We arrived at the start garage for the usual photos and introductions to the dignitaries, the race started at 4pm and I was third from last man off ay 4.47pm (by now it had reached 46 degrees). I charged off down the hill at an incredible 40.3 mph in pursuit of a man I had never beaten before at about half distance I had caught him and my two minute man was just catching me. I stayed with in sight of him for a few miles but once we were on the fast section he was off. I just concentrated on my race and rode as fast as I could and caught a few more on the way to the finish. The finish was up a short sharp climb , but after 22km in 46 degrees it was a struggle and when I got over the finish I had nothing left in my legs at all, I fell off the trike with exhaustion. After about three litres of water I was ready for the result and found that I had done better than expected with second and s personal by 10secs with 39.26.
